Varela, 39, lives in Pueblo and represents the 3rd Congressional District on the Colorado Board of Education after being appointed to a vacant seat in 2023. He ran unsuccessfully for the state Senate in 2022. He served in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Iraq, has a master’s degree in social work and has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He faces five other candidates in the June 25th Primary.
